Most water purifier guides rank by price. That's the wrong starting point: a ₹25,000 RO purifier and a ₹3,000 gravity filter solve different problems, and one of them may be useless in your home.
The question that decides everything is where your water comes from. Borewell, tanker and municipal water carry very different dissolved-solid (TDS) loads, and the technology that handles one will underperform or waste money on another.

Step 1: Match the Technology to Your Water Source
RO (Reverse Osmosis) — for borewell, tanker and high-TDS water
An RO membrane removes dissolved solids: salts, heavy metals and the mineral load that makes borewell water taste brackish. It's the only technology here that reduces TDS.
You need RO if: your supply is borewell, tanker or municipal water you know to be hard or high-TDS.
The trade-offs: RO sends part of the input water to drain, needs electricity and a plumbing point, and strips beneficial minerals, which is why most modern RO units add a mineraliser, copper or alkaline stage afterwards. Newer models waste less: Aquaguard says its Aquasaver models recover 60% more water than older RO purifiers, and Pureit says its Eco Elite 2X saves up to 50%.
UV + UF — for good municipal water only
UV deactivates bacteria and viruses; UF (ultrafiltration) strains out particles and microorganisms. Neither reduces TDS.
You need UV+UF if: you're on a reliable municipal supply with TDS below about 200 ppm. Both UV models we list say so explicitly.
The upside: no reject water, and the natural minerals stay in.
Gravity / non-electric — for convenience, not hard water
Gravity purifiers use carbon and germ-kill media with no pump or power. They suit rentals, hostels and homes with frequent power cuts, on already-good water. They don't reduce TDS.

A Note on Budget RO Brands
Several of the best-selling purifiers we list come from small online brands: AQUA D PURE (3,000+ a month), Aqua X Pure, Kinsco and Addyz, mostly at ₹4,000–6,000 with 12–21L tanks. They meet our rating and sales bar, but they're newer than KENT, Aquaguard or Pureit. Installation is often charged separately, warranties usually cover electrical parts only, and several listings share one rating pool across models. Check certification claims and service coverage for your pin code before buying.
Before You Buy: Four Things Worth Checking
1. Get your TDS measured first. A cheap TDS meter costs a few hundred rupees, and the reading decides whether you need RO at all.
2. Budget for running costs, not just the purchase. Filters and membranes are the real cost of ownership. Several models now cover them for years: Native (2–3 years), Livpure Allura Prime (2 years free maintenance), Aquaguard Aspire Glow and Enrich Ritz Pro (up to 4 years unconditional).
3. Check service coverage in your city. KENT, Aquaguard, Pureit and Livpure are long established. Native's service is app-based. Smaller brands vary.
4. Account for RO wastewater. In areas with supply restrictions, it's the main practical argument for UV+UF where your water allows.

Do gravity water purifiers reduce TDS?
