Walk into any appliance shop and most gas stoves on display have a black glass top. Stainless steel is still around, and it suits some kitchens better. The burners underneath are usually brass on both, so the choice is mostly about the top: how it cleans, what can break, and what it costs. This guide uses the 16 models on our gas stove page, all rated 4★+ on Amazon with 100+ ratings and 100+ sold a month (checked 12 October 2026), for real prices and specs.

We haven't run hands-on tests. Specs and warranties come from the makers' Amazon listings; prices are from 12 October 2026.

The Short Answer

If you want the easiest daily cleaning and the widest choice, buy glass. If heavy vessels get banged down on your stove or you've broken a glass top before, buy steel.

Glass-Top Gas Stoves

Glass-top stoves use toughened glass, the same kind of heat-treated glass used in oven doors, laid over a metal frame. Spills sit on a smooth surface and wipe off, which is the main reason they dominate sales: 13 of the 16 stoves we list have glass tops.

Thickness varies. Where the listing states it, the glass on our list is 6 mm (Butterfly Smart, Milton Premium 3B, Preethi Alya) or 8 mm (Everflame Aurum, Blowhot Quartz).

Makers back the glass with long warranties. Several give more cover on the glass than on the rest of the stove:

ModelGlass warranty
Elica Vetro 773 AI7 years
Preethi Alya, Crompton FlameStar, Everflame Aurum, Beyond Dorado, Beyond Altair5 years
Blowhot Quartz10 years on the whole product
Butterfly Smart 2B and 4B1 year on the whole product

Most families: a proven 3-burner glass top with 2 years on the burners and glass

The Elica Vetro 703 (3 burners, about ₹3,600) is our Best Overall: 800+ sold a month and 2 years on the glass, burners and valves. On a budget, the Butterfly Smart 2B (about ₹2,300) is the most-reviewed stove we list, and the Surya Flame 2B (about ₹1,900) is the cheapest. For the longest glass cover, the Preethi Alya gives 5 years on the glass and burners for about ₹4,100.

Living with glass: let the top cool before wiping it, don't drag heavy vessels across it, and use the pan supports rather than resting a hot tawa directly on the glass.

Stainless-Steel Gas Stoves

A steel top can't crack, and it shrugs off heavy vessels and the odd dropped lid. The trade-off is cleaning: steel shows water spots and grease, and spills around the burners need scrubbing rather than wiping. A thick body (1.2 mm on two of our three) resists dents.

All three steel models in our list cost more than the Elica Vetro, but each has a longer warranty than the Butterfly Smart's 1 year:

  • Everflame Prime 4B (₹7,599): 1.2 mm stainless steel, four brass burners, 2 years with doorstep service. It's the best-selling steel model we list (700+ a month) and rated 4.3★, although Amazon pools that rating with the 2-burner Prime.
  • Vidiem Viva (₹6,590): three burners (jumbo, medium, small) and a 5-year product warranty, rated 4.2★ by 2,556 buyers.
  • Sujata Majestic (₹12,627): 1.2 mm matt steel, SABAF gas valves and a PNG jet in the box. The listing title says 9 years' warranty, without saying what it covers.

Other Things That Matter More Than the Top

  • Burner size. For big pressure cookers and kadhais, look for a large or jumbo burner. Models with one include the Vidiem Viva (steel) and the Crompton FlameStar, Elica Vetro 773 AI and Blowhot Quartz (glass).
  • Auto ignition. Only four of our 16 have it, all with glass tops: the Elica Vetro 773 AI, Blowhot Quartz, and the Beyond Dorado and Altair hobs.
  • Flame failure device. It cuts the gas if a flame goes out. Only the two Beyond hobs have it.
  • PNG. If you have piped gas, check that the model can be converted. Our gas stove FAQ lists the ones whose listings say so.

So Which Should You Buy?

  • You want easy cleaning and a modern look: glass, such as the Elica Vetro 703 or Preethi Alya.
  • Heavy vessels, a busy kitchen, or a broken glass top in the past: steel, such as the Everflame Prime or Vidiem Viva.
  • The tightest budget: glass, because every steel stove in our list costs more than ₹6,500. The Surya Flame starts at about ₹1,900.
