A home atta chakki costs ₹15,000 to ₹18,000. Does grinding your own wheat ever pay that back? We worked it out from three things: what the sellers say the machines use in electricity, what wheat and atta actually cost in October 2026, and how much atta a family gets through.
Short answer: electricity is close to nothing (under ₹1 per kg at ₹8 a unit). The real saving depends almost entirely on where you buy your wheat and which atta you'd otherwise buy. For a family using 20 kg a month, a ₹15,000 chakki takes about 12 years to pay back against average-priced atta, about 6 against budget branded packs, and about 3 against premium branded atta.
Where a number is the seller's claim, we say so. We haven't measured these machines ourselves.
Step 1: Electricity per kg
Every atta chakki we list is a 1 HP machine, and every seller lists about 0.75 units of electricity an hour. That's a seller figure, not one we've measured. The sellers also list how much flour each machine grinds in an hour:
| Atta chakki | Seller's grinding rate | Units per kg (from seller figures) |
|---|---|---|
| ShreejiFine (both models) | 8–12 kg/hr | 0.06–0.09 |
| Milan | 8–10 kg/hr | 0.08–0.09 |
| NAVSUKH, MICROACTIVE, V-SONS | 10–12 kg/hr | 0.06–0.08 |
| Lucky Mycrofine Eco Plus | 7–8 kg/hr | 0.09–0.11 |
So a kilo of atta takes roughly 0.06 to 0.11 units. In rupees:
| Your tariff | Electricity per kg of atta |
|---|---|
| ₹6 a unit | about 40–65 paise |
| ₹8 a unit | about 50–85 paise |
| ₹10 a unit | about 60 paise–₹1.10 |
For a family grinding 20 kg a month, that's about 1.3–2.2 units, or ₹10–17 a month at ₹8 a unit. Electricity is not what decides whether a chakki is worth it.
Step 2: What wheat and atta cost (October 2026)
Government averages. The Department of Consumer Affairs tracks retail prices across India. On 10 October 2026 its all-India average was ₹31.96/kg for wheat and ₹37.72/kg for atta (fcainfoweb.nic.in). For context, the minimum support price for the 2026-27 wheat crop is ₹2,585 a quintal (₹25.85/kg); retail prices sit above that.
Packaged atta on Amazon, 11 October 2026 (10 kg packs):
| Atta | Price | Per kg |
|---|---|---|
| Fortune Chakki Fresh Atta | ₹435 | ₹43.50 |
| Patanjali Whole Wheat Chakki Atta | ₹433 | ₹43.30 |
| Aashirvaad Superior MP Atta | ₹543 | ₹54.30 |
Whole wheat on Amazon, the same day: Fortune Pure Lokwan Wheat was ₹650 for 10 kg, ₹65/kg. That's more per kg than Fortune's own packaged atta. If you'd be buying grain online in small packs, a chakki won't save you money at all.
Step 3: The payback
Whole-wheat atta keeps the bran, so 1 kg of wheat gives close to 1 kg of atta (a little is lost as dust). Using the government's ₹31.96/kg average for wheat plus about 60 paise of electricity, home-ground atta costs about ₹32.60 a kilo.
Here's what that saves for a family using 20 kg of atta a month (change this to your own figure), against a ₹15,000 chakki:
| If you'd otherwise buy… | Saving per kg | Saving per year | Years to pay back ₹15,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atta at the government average (₹37.72/kg) | about ₹5 | about ₹1,240 | about 12 |
| Fortune Chakki Fresh (₹43.50/kg) | about ₹11 | about ₹2,600 | about 6 |
| Aashirvaad Superior MP (₹54.30/kg) | about ₹22 | about ₹5,200 | about 3 |
What this leaves out:
- Wear parts. Warranties usually exclude jalis, rubber and plastic parts, and most cover the machine as a whole for only 1 year. See the warranty fine print for each machine.
- Your wheat price. These figures use the national retail average. If you buy wheat in bulk locally for less, you save more; if you buy small packs, you save less or nothing.
- Time. Cleaning and drying wheat, grinding, and brushing out the chamber each time.
- A local chakki. If you already take your wheat to a neighbourhood flour mill, you're paying grain price plus a grinding charge. A home machine only replaces that charge, so compare it with what your local mill asks per kg.
Step 4: How long does a month's atta take to grind?
At the sellers' 10–12 kg an hour, 20 kg takes about 1.5–2 hours of running. NAVSUKH and V-SONS say to run their machines for up to 40 minutes, then rest them 30–35 minutes, so 20 kg is about three sittings. The other sellers don't publish a rest time.
So Who Should Buy One?
It makes financial sense if your family uses a lot of atta, you can buy wheat at or below the retail average, and you'd otherwise buy premium branded atta.
Money aside, people buy one to:
- Grind the grain they choose: Sharbati, Lokwan, Khapli, or millets like bajra, jowar and ragi (nine of the ten we list name these; Milan's listing just says "grains")
- Get the coarseness they want, using the 7–10 jalis that come with each machine
- Grind dry masalas at home (most models; not the MICROACTIVE Classic or Florence)
- Grind in small batches, so the atta in the kitchen was milled recently
It probably doesn't pay if you use less than 10 kg a month, you'd be buying grain in small packs online, or you'd otherwise buy budget atta.

FAQs
How much electricity does an atta chakki use? The sellers of every chakki we list say about 0.75 units an hour. At 8–12 kg an hour, that's roughly 0.06–0.09 units per kg of atta, or about 50–75 paise per kg at ₹8 a unit.
Is grinding atta at home cheaper than buying packaged atta? Per kg, usually yes, if you buy wheat at around the retail average (₹31.96/kg in October 2026). Home-ground atta then costs about ₹32.60/kg, against ₹37.72 for the national atta average and ₹43–54/kg for branded 10 kg packs on Amazon. But the machine costs ₹15,000+, so it takes 3 to 12 years to pay back for a family using 20 kg a month.
Does an atta chakki increase the electricity bill much? No. Grinding 20 kg a month uses about 1.3–2.2 units by the sellers' figures, ₹10–17 a month at ₹8 a unit.
